Figurant is a live audiovisual performance that combines analogue film, experimental image-making processes, improvisation, and spoken word. First presented at Strange Parade in Nunhead, London, it playfully explores the concept of the séance, bringing together a visual artist, two musicians, and a writer. Using 8mm film from the 1960s physically altered through submersion in the River Ravensbourne, Figurant embraces chance-based material transformation, decay and distortion as creative forces. Projected film sequences, live improvised sound, field recordings and spoken word interact in real time, creating a multi-sensory performance and an embodied sense of the otherworldly.
